The Artistical Legacy between Fantastic Realism and Early Renaissance

The Artistical Legacy between Fantastic Realism and Early Renaissance.

Here on this issue, we will analyze the most struggled issue on art. How strong is the connection between Early Renaissance artists of the 1400's / 1500's and the Fantastic Realist artists of the present day? ...Well, this is most deepest issue and exceeds from the similarity of the palettes of the involved paintings of this issue. There is so much artists lived on Early Renaisssance which they surprisingly used strong visions exceeds from their era..

The most famous artist from this era is: Hieronymus Bosch aka: Jheronimus Bosch or originally as: Jheronimus van Aken. He depicts in his artworks as several triptychs. Among of his most famous artworks he depicts paradises which contains Adam and Eve and many wondrous metamorhosed creatures within. Also he depicts nude figures and tremendous metamorphosed fruits and birds around. Mostly used hell with depictions of various type of fantastic punishments. ("The Garden of Earthly Delights" one example) These paintings (especially the Hell panel) are painted with fantasies and dreams.

In his paintings, and more powerfully in works such as his Temptation of St. Anthony, Bosch draws his fantastic dreams and artistic visions can be explained as fantastic art as unusual for the time. Bosch is also one of the most revolutionary draftsmen in the history of art, producing some of the first autonomous sketches in Northern Europe.

The next artist which can be seen as fantastic is: Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni or simply: Michelangelo. He mostly known as Sculptor. His most famaus and rare painting artwork is: "The ceilings of the Sistine Chapel". Michelangelo painted the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel; the work took approximately four years to complete. (1508–1512) This artwork mostly comes from the descriptions of  the Holy Bible.
In this marvelous painting masterpiece, we can easily see the figures are flying throughout the sky. In the bottom, several demons and devils are trying to catch down the sinners which they are desperately tries to survive from the punishments of hell.

Atop of this painting, we see the God which he flying throughout the air, and gives life and power to Adam with a single finger touch. All these Visions and Fantastic dreams are comes from the roots of his point of view of Holy Bible. And this marvelous artwork contains numerous suprisingly fantastic creations.

The other famous artist who use his artistic dreams and fantasies in his arts is: Peter Paul Rubens. The flemish artist lived in the era of Baroque period in the late 1500's.

Especially in his famous artwork The Fall of Icarus (1636), we can see two winged flying Ikarus, which they fall throughout the skies. His depictions of this artwork strongly comes from his artistic visions.

When we jumped the present era, we can easily encounter the Surrealism movement, the Fantastic Realism movements and Visionary Art movements which their art and their artists strongly use their artistical dreams and artistical fantasies for their highly aesthetical artworks. We will try to descript some of their artworks.
Boris Vallejo works almost exclusively in the fantastic art movement. His hyper-representational paintings have graced the covers of dozens of science fiction paperbacks and are featured in a series of best-selling calendars.

Subjects of his paintings are typically sword and sorcery, gods, monsters, and well-muscled warriors and female barbarians engaged in battles or winged demi-angels flying throughout the skies with a several metamorphosed creatures.

The most famous artist of the original Surrealist movement is: Salvador Dalí. (Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech) Dalí is best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist artworks. His painterly skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters. Especially his most strong allegoric paintings is for the destructions that  caused by the 2nd World War.

He strongly depicts the Metamorhose of the different kind of objects, time-shifts, formal transformations and conceptual allegories in his marvelous masterpieces. The brush-technique on the surfaces he used is actually comes from the techniques of the Quattrocento era masters.

Ernst Füchs is one of the most important present day artist from the Fantastic-Realism movement. He actually leads the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism movement. His paintings holds stunning fantastic visions, remarkably strong fantasies. In his artworks like "Adam Mysticus" he depicts Adam, Eve and the Prime-Snake which is the prime-devil himself, as appears with several allegorical-metamorphosed creatures and immense designs which comes from his strongly artistical visions.

Also as Salvador Dalí, the brush-technique on the surfaces that Ernst Füchs used is actually comes from the techniques of the Quattrocento era masters.

Today's most famous Fantastic Visionary artist is H.R.Giger or originally: Hans Rudolf (Ruedi) Giger. And his visionary dreams and fantastic images he used on the surfaces mostly can seen on endless struggle of sins with a pleasure. They struggle the fantastic punishments near beings with devils and demons. Sometimes lustful figures with mutagenic manifestations smoothly appears from their bodies.

His depictions can be seen with several metamorhosed living creations, organic designs which also merged with mechanical parts, several humanoid figures merged with halfly biological / halfly mechanical parts with erotism. Leaden atmoshperes within barren surrealistic planets. His designs still influenced mostly in several famous Hollywood movies in science-fiction genre.

Philippe Caza is an Fantastic Realist and Science-Fiction Artist. And his paintings mostly contains his Scifi dreams, and artistical fantasies in his art. The technique he use on the surfaces actually detailed with his strongly colourful palette.

He actually depicts ultra advanced civilisations, shape-shifted figures which their internal organs manifested with biomechanical parts, conceptual creations with mostly intense landscapes.

As far as we try to compare here, the connections shows itself in countless ways...
I try to unearthed some of them. But surely there are more connections as far as I try to compare a little.
Different eras naturally will differ each eras. Which of those eras contains full of different views. But in also artistically point of view, there are roots which can not be excluded especially in art for centuries.

Alex Can Emed's artworks evolved from his early period which he was influenced from Salvador Dali's masterpieces to his late era which he was influenced from Hans Ruedi Giger, on the other hand, Alex Can got his own illustrative color palette in his art which he achieved it from 1980's illustrative artists such as Frank Frazetta, Jeff Easley, Alfredo Alcala and John Buscema.
Alex Can mixed this colorful characteristics into his Biomechanical Art style which is innovated by Giger.
So what Alex Can did is grinding all his inspirations together and mix them with his own designs and the Science-Fictional universe he designed.

Born in a well-rooted and noble family, Alex Can's complicated nobility has been came from his grandmother's mother's side from Ali Pasha of Tepelenia (Lion of Ioannina) and from Ali Pasha back to King Pyrhus I of Epirus and Serbian King Đurad Brankoviç, and also from his grandmother's father's side from Graf von Brandis (Ekrem Recep Batra), whom is a Tyrolean Count, also is a Cavalry Colonel and a Fighter-Pilot who flew with Red Baron himself in World War I, Alex Can's other nobility also came from his mother's family which descended from Şerif Çolak, the founder of Kula Mensucat, one of the first tapestry factories established in the Republic of Turkey back in 1920's in Izmir.
This noble culture in his family gaved Alex Can to learn and enjoy noble traditional European Etiquettes and the European culture since he was a child, such as enjoying Baroque Music, Renaissance Art, Gothic Art and the European enlightment literature such as Existentialism and Stoicism.

Alex Can borned in 5 April 1981, which his very birthdate allowed him to enjoy the entertainment culture of 1980's & 1990's which will later strongly affected Alex Can's Surrealist artworks.

Begin to paint since his childhood. Graduated from Yeditepe University, Fine Arts Faculty, Plastic Arts section, on the Ateliers of Prof Ergin Inan & Ismail Ilhan & Prof Zahit Büyükişliyen & Ord. Prof Özdemir Altan in 2003. Since before his Academical education Alex Can dedicated himself on Surrealism by the beginning of 1997, and he is an artist who has won 10 awards in total.

His artworks mostly aimed both on the Canvas and Photo-Block surfaces; he is not simply overseer to lookers comfort, or not try to create the images that the exacly for heal the lookers feelings..

The real purpose on his art is to making everyone to understand the wild nature of "Homo Sapiens".
To open the way of understanding our primitive nature that we hide within our intellect.
His artworks is exactly works like a device that works the same as the mirror.
A mirror that can reflect our wild nature directly back to us..

Alex Can Emed mostly making his artworks on canvas surfaces or pre-made wooden-plate surfaces with oftenly using Airbrush (Acrylics) and also with Oil Colors by using Misch Technique, sometimes he uses Tempera and Indian Ink for retouches.
Alex Can Emed's artistical production is a slow process since it requires to get intense inspirations before he made any new upcoming artworks.

  (Çiğdem Çolak-Yazıcı's private collection)

For centuries humanity try to conquer the lands, dominate the nature, try to converting the way of natural rivers. And also, as humanity we try to cancel the waves of riverfalls, and cutting forests out of lands, using the technology for mastermind the other creatures, using the technology for mastermind the climate and weather seasons.
And finally we use the technology to simulate the young-human generations as a "perfect-client".
And theese applications that the humanity process, is not comes from love or empathy.
Theese process directly comes from our hidden wild nature that possessed by lust, fear, and egoism..
At all theese for.. Alex Can Emed is about to create the images and visions that can "shock" us, and can face-to-face to our wild nature.

For that he use mostly use in his Art:

  Metamorphosed forms like saw,
Old metalic parts that feels like used to be a part of an old fabrics,
Flying gothic forms, embryons that cloned together, empty vials,
Cave entrances that looks like crocodile mouth, saw teeths,
Humanioids that being erotical and mechanical metamorphosis (Erotomechanics),
  Chemical bulbs, and genetic mutations,
Creatures that being biological and mechanic metamorphosis (Biomechanics),
Metamorphosed Skulls, forms that being Biological and Grotesque metamorphosis (Biogrotesque),
Bones and skulls that formed like as part as Gothic Structures. (Biogothic)

With that kind of material he choose, the images creates the feelings that the materials comes from both Futuristic and Gothic styles, the visions that he choose to add them with the iconographic material that Alex Can Emed choosed, the lookers start to feel like beeing an unsteady places, fearful places, places that feels general "grotesque" feelings, and brings to lookers minds looping over..

(Remake of this artwork is in Selim Yetkin's private collection)

Alex Can, making his artworks with using Airbrush pistol by spraying layer to layer while staying loyal to his sketches, it's a technical process requires concentration on the design rather than being just spontaneous on canvas. This ecole highly praises every single details and illustrative talents on the artworks, rather than praising just collaging random geometrical spaces and bold colors as we can easily see in most of the contemporary artworks today.

With the effect and consonansity of the disstressfull feelings that he choosed to show in his art just from the beginning.

That can be easily said exactly as;

"The wild nature of the humanity that which escape from it from the beginning."

Each artworks of Alex Can, is continuation of the same universe that he created, and so piece by piece the ongoing design of his imaginary universe being shaped as scene by scene.

Alex Can Emed continues to make his artworks since 1997 with 30 years of professional experience and since 2011, he has been in the international Surrealist communities with his art..
